I don’t know what it is about the Family Dollar near my house. Every time I walk in there, I leave feeling like I got scammed. Not actual scammed. More like spiritually scammed. I know they’re not ripping me off. But why does it feel like they are?
So the other day I went in for some sodas. Nothing major. Just three sodas. The deal on the shelf said: “2 for $5.” Simple enough. I grabbed three. I get to the register, the girl scans them, and the screen says: Seven dollars and some change. Bro. I immediately lost my cool. I was like: “Yo, what happened to the special? What the hell is going on?” The cashier looked at me like she’d witnessed this exact meltdown a thousand times before. She calmly explained: “Well, yeah, the first two are part of the deal. The third one isn’t unless you buy another one. Plus taxes.” And, unfortunately, she was absolutely right.
I had already made a scene. I had already activated my inner old man. There was no turning back. So I paid my seven dollars and some silver coins, grabbed my sodas, got in the truck, and started driving home. Then it hit me. Bro… I DID get scammed. Not by Family Dollar. Not by the cashier. Not by the soda companies. I got scammed by inflation. Seven damn dollars for three sodas? SEVEN. I remember when a Silver Streak meal was $2.99. I remember when gas was $1.50. I remember when grabbing a drink didn’t require a minor financial consultation. Now every time I buy something, I stare at the receipt like I’m reviewing evidence for a criminal investigation. I don’t even read the total anymore. I just squint at it and whisper: “There’s no way.” But there is a way. Because that’s how much everything costs now. The crazy part is that after I cooled down, I wasn’t even mad about the sodas anymore. I was mad about time. Mad that I’m old enough to remember when things were cheap. Mad that a simple trip to Family Dollar somehow turned into a reminder that tomorrow is my birthday. Midlife crisis? Naw. Existential crisis. One minute you’re arguing over a soda promotion. The next you’re staring out the windshield wondering what life even means. Maybe that’s the real Family Dollar experience. You don’t go in there to buy things. You go in there to confront your own mortality.
And to top it off, it was the same girl who once helped me find a product. I had been walking up and down every aisle like a lost NPC looking for a quest item. She finally came over and asked if I needed help. I told her what I was looking for. She walked me straight to it. When she pointed it out, I looked at her and said: “I didn’t see those.” Without missing a beat she said: “I know. It’s because you’re a man.” Bro. I couldn’t even argue. I had just spent ten minutes searching every aisle in the store like a raccoon with a concussion. She got me. Maybe that’s why I didn’t stay mad about the sodas. Maybe the real lesson wasn’t inflation. Maybe the real lesson is that Family Dollar is undefeated. Anyway, tomorrow is my birthday. The sodas cost seven dollars. The cashier roasted me. And life still makes no GOD damn sense.
