The RAM Wars: Chronicle of a sort of Cheap Skate Warrior

A few days ago, I was out here scouring the earth for some RAM for my Project EliteDesk… and let me tell you something…

It’s a full-on battlefield out there.

You got entire armies:

  • Ghost RAM (no brand, no history, probably cursed)
  • Overpriced “premium” sticks
  • Dirt-cheap mystery modules that look like they survived a house fire

From trash to gold, and somehow… 👉 it all still blows.

🪖 Phase 1: Facebook Marketplace (The Wild West)

First stop? Local deals.

Facebook Marketplace.

And GOD DAMN, these dudes really think their:

“used, dusty, beat-up RAM sticks”

are made of certified diamonds.

We’re talking: 👉 $80 for ONE 8GB DDR4 stick

EIGHTY.

For something that’s been sitting in a garage since 2017.

But you know me… I don’t get scared.

👉 I get meaner.

I went full search-and-destroy mode, looking for that ultimate deal.

🕰️ Flashback: The Good Old Days

Back in the day:

  • RAM was cheap
  • SSDs were like kid’s lollipops
→ different flavors, different brands, all affordable

And people still had the audacity to say:

“Nah… I’ll wait for prices to drop.”

😂😂😂

Drop?

HELL NAW.

Prices went up higher than a mouse jockey smoking devil’s lettuce.

🔥 Phase 2: Entering Hell (Amazon & Newegg)

Then I got serious.

I said:

“Alright… time to go pro.”

So I stepped into the abyss…

Amazon. Newegg.

And I swear—I must’ve typed something wrong because somehow: 👉 I almost signed up for a 30-year mortgage just to afford 16GB of RAM.

I panicked.

Not gonna lie… 👉 I might’ve thrown up a little.

🧠 Phase 3: Salvation… EBAY

Then it hit me.

Like a divine signal from the tech gods:

“Go to eBay.”

Ah yes…

Trusty eBay.
Master of the Universe.

But don’t get it twisted—it wasn’t easy.

I still had to navigate:

  • landmines
  • fake listings
  • “too good to be true” scams
  • blurry photos taken with a potato

Page after page after page…

Until suddenly…

There it was.

A beautifully priced pair of 8GB sticks.

⚡ The Moment of Truth

Did I bid?

HELL NO.

👉 I slammed “BUY IT NOW” like my life depended on it.

And yeah… Maybe I’m part of the problem.

Maybe people should barter and negotiate to keep prices stable…

But listen…

When you’ve been:

  • disappointed
  • frustrated
  • mentally drained

That instant dopamine hit?

👉 Had me riding ecstasy waves.

🏁 Final Thoughts

Was it worth it?

Absolutely.

Because at the end of the day:

  • I survived the battlefield
  • I secured the RAM
  • and my EliteDesk leveled up

And that, my friends…

👉 is how you win the RAM Wars.

So yeah, the project right now is a used EliteDesk 800 G4 I picked up off eBay for like 125 bucks. No OS, no SSD… just vibes.

It came with 16GB of RAM, but that wasn’t gonna sit right with me… so now it’s at 32GB.

I got Windows 11 Pro on it, slapped in a Klevv 2TB SSD—thing runs clean, no complaints.

Now I’m already looking at adding more storage… maybe a 10TB Skyhawk and a 16TB Exos

but man… prices right now? that’s a whole different battle.

So it’s either:

  • I go used and abused and hope for the best
  • or I go new and feel that hit in my soul

Either way…

yeah… looks like I’m gonna have to pick up some OT 😄
