The Two Essentials: Health and Love

Daily writing prompt
What are the most important things needed to live a good life?

To live a good life, I believe we need two essential things: health and love.

Without love, the soul begins to wither. People may still breathe, still move through their days—but inside, something is missing. What is life without love? It’s waking up with a hollow ache in your chest, going through the motions while feeling disconnected from the world around you.

Health is just as vital. You can be surrounded by love, but without your health, that love can’t carry you far. A strong heart needs a strong body to keep beating.

Can there be balance? Absolutely. But how we find that balance is deeply personal. It’s about how we give and receive love, and how we commit to our well-being. Love thrives when it’s mutual, when it’s nurtured. Health, on the other hand, demands discipline and determination—a daily choice to care for ourselves.

And perhaps, we also need a little darkness within us—not to be consumed by it, but to recognize it. To know when life is good, we must understand when it is not. That contrast gives meaning. As some have said, a harmless man is not a good man. A good man is one who is capable of danger, but chooses restraint.

In the end, a good life isn’t about choosing one over the other. It’s about honoring both—loving fully, living well, and knowing the shadows so we can walk in the light.
